Getting around Majorca
There are many ways of getting around Majorca, by car, taxi, bus, bike or train. Read below to decide what is the right choice for you.
But, before you decide which method of transport you'll be using, take a look at the
Map of Majorca
to decide which
town or village
you're interested in visiting.
Car & Motorcycle
Majorca is the best place to be and especially if you are a bike rider or driving a Majorca car.
Along the north and west coast of Majorca and through the narrow town roads in the centre of Majorca is great for getting around Majorca using a motorcle.Bringing your own car or renting allows you so much freedom to travel the island or just to go shopping.
Car Hire
Car hire is a great idea if you are planning to travel
or even just picking up shopping from the supermarket. My family and I have rented a car for our holiday in Majorca numerous times.
There are roughly 30 car hire agencies on the island.
There are many ways to book, my favourite is booking in advance via the internet so the car is ready in the airport car park rather than spending a few hours filling in papers after the flight.
With a license you have to be 21 years old to rent a car.
Bring your own vehicle
Do you fancy taking your own car to Majorca instead of having a Mallorca car rental.
You will need to bring proof of ownership of your car. When it comes to insurance, third party motor insurance is the minimum requirement in Majorca and Spain. A national identity sticker should be displayed on your car, preferably on the license plate. Also a warning triangle is a must if you are bringing your own vehicle, keep it in your car..
Bike
You could either take your own bike or hire.
I haven’t cycled in Majorca but it doesn’t matter how experienced you are there are many routes ranging around mountainous areas and reasonably flat areas. Buses For getting around Majorca I have used
Mallorca Buses
on many occasions and I would recommend it highly.
Majorca’s buses are divided into five different zones, all going from Palma.
If the bus number’s in the 100s it covers the southwest of the island, in the 200s the west, the 300s a’ lot of the centre and northeast, the 400s the east coast and a bit of the centre and if you would like to go to the south you will need to look for the buses numbered in the 500s.
Fares are very good, for example a one way ticket from Palma to Port d’Andratx would cost €3.80.
You can purchase a ‘Bono Bus’ which is a kind of travel card which allows you to travel on most buses in Palma.
Take a look at these pages for some more information on the Bono Card and the
Majorca Bus Timetables and Tariffs
Taxi
My family and I have used taxis on many occasions, from the airport, when going out for a meal and just for the sake of using one.
A Taxi in Majorca is the best way to travel when visting the island for the first time
. When the taxis are available they have a green bright light lit up on the roof of the vehicle, you can hire these either by flagging them down on the street or by going to a taxi rank, you can identify these by a blue square with a ‘T’. When a taxi is in use a number will be displayed on the roof of the taxi, this displays how many passengers there are in the taxi and therefore you'll need to find another way of getting around majorca. Fares vary and rates go up from 9pm-6am, on weekends and holidays. Official Rates: Flag down 2,84€ (from 6h to 21h) 4,85€ (from 21h to 6h) 4,85€ (holidays)
Price per km 0,84€ Airport supplement 1,40 € Price per hour of waiting time 11 € Taxis accept cards All taxis based at Palma airport and the Taxitour service whiche takes visitors around the main tourist sites are to be fitted with special equipment to enable them to accept credit credit cards from clients, the Transport department ar Palma city council confirmed. The department said that the majority of drivers were in favour of the move. Train On the island there are two train lines which go from Placa d’Espanya in Palma, one that runs to Sòller which is in my top ten places to visit when flying to Majorca and the other which runs to Inca splits to visit Manacor and Sa Pobla.
These trains are a great way of getting around Majorca.
You can take a train to getting around Majorca which will take you to various parts of the island. Train will be the correct choice if you want to reach Inca from Palma
